April Ross

April Ross is only one of only a handful of beach volleyball players to have won medals at least twice in an Olympics. Alix Klineman, playing for the first time at the Tokyo Olympics, will try to earn her third medal. Ross is hoping to secure the Olympic debut gold but she's also hoping to win even more. It may well be that it is her last opportunity, given that she is 39 years old. Nevertheless she is confident that the top awards are within reach. Ross, via NBC Boston, said that when the team performs very well, or even at all, they can earn a gold. "I'm planning to test a little luck." Ross, who was born 1982 and lived within Costa Mesa California with her sister and parents, began participating in sports at Newport Harbor High School. Apart from playing in numerous sports, Ross was also a student at Newport Harbor High School. She was a basketball player and also ran track in addition to her volleyball skills in the indoors as a pre-collegiate athlete. While she did well when playing indoors but it was apparent that her performance was above average. According to her bio, she played a middle blocker and an outside hitter on the volleyball court during her senior year at high school. She was named by the Gatorade National Circle of Champions player of the year in 1999 for her achievements. Her volleyball skills also earned her the Orange County Athlete of the Awards in 2000. Ross is working with Klineman from 2017, but Ross's beach game was established well before that. It's true that she has won numerous tournaments, including one with the legendary player of volleyball. Jennifer Kessy was her partner for six years, between 2007 and the year 2013. She also coached Klineman and herself. Alongside Kessy Ross was a force in the world circuit, winning a world title in 2009. In 2012, the duo were awarded silver medals at the London Olympic Games. Misty May Treanor and Kerri Jennings the legendary team which won the 2012 Olympic Games in London, took them out to win the gold. Ross Jennings was the replacement for May-Treanor as she retired. They went on to compete for the bronze beach volleyball trophy at Rio Olympics in 2016 along with Walsh Jennings. Ross started her college career with the USC Trojans in high school. This was years before Ross hit the sand and turned professional. Her time at USC was quite impressive. As a freshmen in 2000 the Trojans' performance earned her the Pac-10 and NCAA the Freshman of the Year award. Additionally, she was one of the key players in helping the Trojans reach it to the Final Four. She was devastated by a tragic incident in her second year, but she went on to be an All-American in her second year. Over her final two years as a player, she led the Trojans towards the top of the mountain by winning two three consecutive championships at the national level. She had established her place as a legend having won the 2003-2004 Honda Sports Award as the most outstanding female college volleyball player. Ross studied international relations at USC. Margie Ross did not get to see Ross achieve beach volleyball's top levels. Ross lost her mom to cancer of the breast in 2001. Ross was then a sophomore. She has kept her mother in her heart. And Margie remains a source of inspiration to her on the beaches and throughout life.
